Chief of Staff to the CEO
About the Role
Marketing + Media Alliance (MMA) is seeking an experienced Chief of Staff to partner closely with the CEO in supporting our mission to advance major marketers’ ability to create value through evidence-based models, frameworks, and revolutionary innovation. Working across strategy, operations, and execution, the Chief of Staff plays a pivotal role in driving organizational priorities, leading cross-functional initiatives, and ensuring the successful delivery of high-impact projects. This is not a gatekeeping job. It is an additive one: to help the organization move faster and better serve the mission and our members.
What you will own: CEO-sponsored initiatives end-to-end, and the foundational internal programs a fast-scaling organization needs. Also includes line management of the Events, Board, Operations, and Administrative teams — 4 people today, and growing. Plus, the company tech stack and our shift to an AI-first operating model, alongside our Chief AI Officer.
We need a high-energy, organized, intellectually sharp project manager and a strong problem solver to support our fast-scaling organization as Chief of Staff. The whole MMA runs on three things: relentlessness, ownership, and trying to be great at the work, all with the aim of creating legacy-making impact.
This is a game-changing role for a highly motivated, independent, A-player to join our team of marketers, subject matter experts, researchers, and ex-consultants, helping to tackle complex marketing challenges from strategy to execution. As a growing organization (likely to double in next five years), we offer major growth opportunities for the right person, both inside MMA and beyond.
MMA works with the biggest companies in the world, including Google, Meta, and Amazon, and the biggest marketers in the world, including General Motors, Visa, Novartis, Uber, and AT&T. We, quite literally, especially given the onslaught of AI, sit at the most interesting intersection in many parts of business today and work with the largest, most impactful companies out there.
At MMA, our goals are simple: we are here to lead the most extraordinary transformation that marketing and business will experience in our generation.
Learning and leveraging AI is a Big Part of the Job
We fully expect everyone at MMA to learn AI and the toolsets that leverage it. This is not a nice-to-have skill to pick up when you have time. You need to be eager and willing to build real AI fluency and change how you work. We put real time, money and commitment behind that expectation:
We close MMA on Thursday afternoons so everyone here can learn AI. No meetings, no deliverables, just building AI fluency.
We expect you to rebuild your workflows with AI.
We supply access to the tech: Claude, ChatGPT, and whatever else earns its place.
We run regular training sessions, and a Chief AI Officer leads internal adoption, upskilling, tool onboarding, and measurement of whether any of it is working. The Chief AI Officer owns the tooling and the program. You own whether the organization actually changes how it works.
Strategic Leadership
Lead cross-functional strategic projects from planning through implementation. Identify and lead wherever there are gaps.
Take ownership of CEO-sponsored initiatives from concept through execution, ensuring successful delivery and measurable outcomes.
Coordinate major foundational internal initiatives requiring experienced program and project management.
Operational Leadership
Support department leaders with operational planning and problem-solving.
Support the adoption of automation and tools to reduce manual work.
Improve onboarding, training materials and internal documentation.
Act as a bridge between teams to remove blockers and improve communication.
Identify opportunities to improve organizational effectiveness through process improvement and operational excellence.
People Leadership
Line manage the Events, Board and Administrative teams, currently 4 people. And likely more over time.
Support and own the tech stack at the company. And again, support a total transformation of the company to an AI-first leadership dynamic.
Executive Operations
Maintain visibility of CEO priorities, ensuring strategic initiatives remain aligned and deliverables are completed on schedule and manage the team to deliver.
Provide leadership during periods of organizational change and support critical operational priorities as they arise.
Develop executive presentations, board materials, and strategic communications to support organizational decision-making. And raise the quality of all of that.
Who You Are
You are naturally proactive and enjoy solving complex organizational challenges before they become problems.
You build trusted relationships and influence stakeholders across multiple teams and levels.
You are equally comfortable thinking strategically and delivering operationally.
You thrive in an entrepreneurial environment where priorities evolve quickly and owning the outcome is at your core. That bears repeating. You must thrive in accepting full responsibility for outcomes.
You love to create new solutions. You would rather rebuild a broken system than keep patching it. (Maybe before others even knew it was a problem.)
You enjoy creating clarity, structure and momentum within complex organizations.
You like working at the top of an organization and get energy by exposure to some of the biggest C-suite execs in the world.
Tech We Use
Claude and ChatGPT, including agents, projects and the coding tools (Cowork, Code, Codex). This is the core of how we work, not a side experiment.
Microsoft 365: Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint and Teams.
Slack for everything internal.
Asana for tasks, projects and program management.
HubSpot for marketing and member communications plus membership records, pipeline and email automation.
Apollo for audience building and prospect campaigns.
Granola or Fireflies for meeting capture and Zoom for webinars and member sessions.
Zapier and other automation tools for building workflows that run without us.
If you know other things that would make us better, we’re very open to that.
What Top Candidates Bring
Bachelor’s degree preferred but not required; advanced degrees and MBAs are valued but not needed. Raw intelligence matters more than schooling.
7-8+ years of senior CoS or operating experience, or in an equivalent right-hand role to a CEO. 15+ years of overall experience is essential. A background in business management, operations or consulting are equally relevant. Regardless, must have a proven record of high performance and achievements in past positions.
Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, including experience preparing executive communications, presentations, and reports.
PMP or another project management credential is a plus, not a requirement.
Experience working around marketing, or in roles that involve a deep level of understanding of marketing. Especially advanced marketing for big enterprises.
Cultural Fit
MMA has an entrepreneurial spirit, and the workload tends to be fluid and urgent. We are scrappy go-getters who thrive with:
Freedom to explore solutions and improvements (no red tape!).
Tackling tough, complex problems (we love challenges).
Designing and implementing solutions that are innovative and create lasting change and value to our team, the members and the industry at large.
We’re fearless, driven, and intelligently disruptive. That’s how we solve challenges that most others give up on.
This is a great environment for people who like to stretch themselves and enjoy having the independence and authority to improve processes and drive measurable outcomes. We’re on a mission.
It is not a great fit for people who thrive on structure, static goals, and well-worn paths.
The work we do will impact the industry well into the future and provides legacy for those involved.
