About Mission Law

Mission Law is a modern law firm that serves startups, founders, and emerging companies. We sit at the intersection of law, technology, and entrepreneurship, leveraging cutting-edge AI tools and automation to deliver faster, smarter legal services. Our team is deeply embedded in the startup ecosystem and brings experience from top startup firms including Wilson Sonsini, Fenwick, Gunderson Dettmer, Latham & Watkins, and Ropes & Gray, and degrees from Stanford, Yale, UC Berkeley, Duke, and Northwestern. Our clients span diverse industries including AI, fintech, hardware, healthtech, legaltech, crypto, and consumer brands, and we've helped them raise funding from leading investors such as 776, A16Z, Accel, Animoca Brands, Chemistry Ventures, Conviction, Gradient Ventures, Greycroft, Hustle Fund, Kleiner Perkins, Neo, YC, and more.

The Role

The Chief of Staff is a high-visibility, high-impact role that sits at the center of Mission Law's operations. You will work directly with the Managing Partner as an operational partner and executor - helping translate vision into action, managing projects and people, and ensuring that the firm's most important initiatives actually get done.

This is not a traditional support role. You'll be in the room where decisions are made, expected to develop and share independent judgment, and trusted to own things end-to-end. The best analogy for this role in the startup world is an executive shadow who quickly becomes an executive - many chiefs of staff at growth-stage companies use this role as a launchpad into senior leadership or launching a company.

What You'll Do

Executive Operations

  • Serve as an operational extension of the Managing Partner - attending meetings with or on behalf of the Managing Partner, monitoring progress and managing follow through from other leaders and teams, and removing friction across the firm's key initiatives by being the voice of the Managing Partner as applicable.
  • Synthesize information from across the firm and provide the Managing Partner with clear, actionable summaries and recommendations to remove critical bottlenecks.
  • Serve as a thought partner on high-level firm strategy, including monitoring the changing competitive landscape, new technologies, and evolving client expectations — surfacing implications for Mission's positioning and identifying opportunities to stay ahead.

Team Operations

  • Build the firm's management operating system by setting up workflows, tracking progress, and driving accountability across teams. Includes standing up staff meetings, 1:1 cadences, OKR cycles, and team offsites.
  • Design and run performance and growth systems end-to-end - skills-based competency frameworks, quarterly performance reviews, and a system for collecting real-time feedback that turn Mission into the place lawyers and operators come to level up clearly and quickly.

Special Projects

  • Act as force multiplier for the partnership — attend partner meetings, translate ideas into action items, run cross-functional initiatives, and demonstrate tremendous agency to close the loops that otherwise stall, with direct exposure to every part of the business.
  • Build from zero to one high impact initiatives as opportunities arise.
  • Broadly operate at the intersection of law, technology, and operations - learning quickly and contributing across functions.

Who We're Looking For

We're looking for someone from one of these backgrounds - or a compelling combination of them:

  • Investment banking or finance (2–4 years): You know how to structure information, operate with precision under pressure, and synthesize complexity into clear outputs.
  • Top-tier consulting (Bain, BCG, McKinsey, or equivalent): You're trained to solve problems fast, communicate clearly, and manage up effectively.
  • Operations professional: You've been the person who keeps a company running - and you understand what it takes to build systems, not just execute tasks.
  • High-performing recent graduate: You don't have years of experience, but you have exceptional judgment, drive, and the demonstrated ability to punch above your weight.

Across all backgrounds, we're looking for:

  • Strong organizational and project management instincts - you make things happen and don't let things slip.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills - you write clearly, present confidently, and adjust your style to the audience.
  • High organizational EQ - you understand dynamics, read situations accurately, and know how to navigate complex relationships.
  • A genuine appetite for technology - you're already using AI tools in your work, or you're excited to. Our tech stack includes Claude (Chat, CoWork, Managed Agents), Asana, Front, Airtable, Granola, Linear, Slack, Zapier, and Google Workspace.
  • Discretion and judgment - you'll be in sensitive conversations and have visibility into confidential matters.

Why Mission Law

  • You'll work directly with a founder and managing partner who is deeply involved, thoughtful, and committed to your growth.
  • You'll have a front-row seat to a technology-forward law firm operating at the frontier of AI-enabled legal practice.
  • Our clients are building real companies - and you'll be embedded in the ecosystem that supports them.
  • This role has a track record, in the startup world broadly, of becoming something much bigger. Chiefs of staff become COOs, GMs, and founders.
  • We're a low-ego team that takes the work seriously and each other kindly.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Salary: $100,000 – $125,000, commensurate with experience
  • 100% employer-paid medical, dental, vision, and life insurance
  • 401(k) with safe harbor matching
  • Wi-Fi and cell plan reimbursement
  • Full reimbursement for work equipment
  • Bonus eligibility based on quarterly performance reviews
  • Fully remote with flexible scheduling

How to Apply

Please submit your resume and a brief cover letter explaining why this role is the right fit for you - and why Mission Law specifically. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis.
