Led by our Chief Actuary, the Center of Excellence encompasses corporate actuaries working on valuation, model development, assumption setting, projections and financial reporting.

The Chief of Staff is a critical part of New Ways of Working at Equitable, reporting to the Chief Actuary. This is a complex role that involves aspects of human capital management, program management, budgeting and communications. A successful candidate must be skilled at working in a matrixed organization and have a strong track record for developing and improving processes.

Key Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Plan, coordinate and execute Chief Actuary strategy, driving key strategic initiatives on behalf of the Chief Actuary
  • Prepared executive for day-to-day activities and manages key initiatives designed to achieve stated business objectives and enhance operational efficiencies
  • Broadly responsible for multiple projects and initiatives but may not have direct ownership or accountability. Manages issues as they arise with various projects
  • Responsible for planning and developing content for meetings with the executive's business area
  • Provides effective, specialized advice in a host of areas including project management, human resources, budget, logistics and administration
  • Analyzes complex data to inform recommendations
  • May be involved in annual budget preparation
  • Acts as a point of contact between top management and employees or other stakeholders
  • Coordinates with Performance Leads in other areas to drive engagement across teams
  • Passion to challenge the status quo and find new solutions that drive out of the box ideas – appreciate and embraces change
  • Belief in a non-hierarchical culture of collaboration, transparency, safety, and trust
  • Willingness to “roll up the sleeves” and to go outside comfort zone to learn, ability to push teams to do the same
  • Ability to synthesize details of day-to-day work with overall departmental vision

The base salary range for this position is $87,000-$153,000. Actual base salaries vary based on skills, experience, and geographical location. In addition to base pay, Equitable provides compensation to reward performance with base salary increases, spot bonuses, and short-term incentive compensation opportunities. Eligibility for these programs depends on level and functional area of responsibility.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • 5+ years of work experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Self-starter with the ability to plan and organize with and through people at all levels of the organization is critical to success.
  • Being pro-active, anticipating needs and staying out ahead of them.
  • Ability to formulate clear and concise executive messages to internal and external audiences on complex topics
  • Able to facilitate meetings and enable discussion that leads to resolution and communicate results to management.
  • Must be flexible and have a comfort level with working in an often-ambiguous environment.
  • Belief in a non-hierarchical culture of collaboration, transparency, safety, and trust
  • Readiness to empower others to fail, learn and grow
  • Willingness to “roll up the sleeves” and to go outside comfort zone to learn and ability to push teams to do the same
  • Actuarial or Risk Management experience.

  • Decision Making and Critical Thinking: Knowledge of the decision-making process and associated tools and techniques; ability to accurately analyze situations and reach productive decisions based on informed judgment.
  • Planning: Tactical, Strategic: Knowledge of effective planning techniques and ability to contribute to operational (short term), tactical (1-2 years) and strategic (3-5 years) planning in support of the overall business plan.
  • Storytelling: Knowledge of concepts and ability to plan, create and present business proposals, initiatives and ideas by storytelling actual business scenarios that are situation-specific, engaging, memorable and persuasive as compared to one-way, fact-based presentations.
