Default is a compound startup. If you’re not familiar with this terminology, compound startups are big, ambitious bets on opportunities that span multiple point-solutions and business processes. Compound startups aim to solve the entire problem as opposed to just one piece of it. This is obviously a much harder kind of company to build, but if you do it right you’ll see all kinds of advantages emerge across both product, distribution, and culture.

Being a multi-product vendor also means customers will always find new ways to use your product, unlocking new use cases and product expansion opportunities for you as you build. At Default, customers typically start by using us to automate their complex inbound lead workflows with our scheduling, routing, and workflow apps alongside third-party enrichment data they can purchase through Default, and AI agents they can configure natively.

Our team and business are growing fast; we just moved into our third office in a year in Flatiron, and have grown revenue 4X since the start of 2025. We have several years of runway, tens of millions in funding, and are grateful to serve hundreds of customers, from small startups to large enterprises.

About The Role

We're hiring a Chief of Staff to be a force-multiplier to our CEO and the emergent leadership team. This is a very important role for Default. We are NOT hiring an Executive Assistant for the CEO. This is a high-intensity operator role that will span every team at Default. You'll work directly with the CEO to identify + maximize leverage for the business, will use data to help the team make better decisions faster, and will ensure top-notch execution on mission-critical projects.

What You’ll Do

  • Understand and mirror how the CEO approaches problems and opportunities, and ensure that perspective is represented and voiced when he can't be present to bring that POV to the team.  
  • Take ownership of mission-critical, cross-functional BizOps initiatives that lack an explicit owner.  
  • Help the CEO prepare for and coordinate board meetings, handle investor communications, and maximize the leverage we get from the incredible network we've built around the company.  
  • Keep the CEO operating at maximum leverage by ensuring he has the right context at any given time.  
  • Assist the CEO and GTM/Ops leaders with financial modeling, forecasting, and headcount planning and ensuring these operating plans are reflected in the company's operating cadence.

Qualifications

  • Based in New York City.  
  • Comfortable working in-office, 5x per week. We believe in the force-multiplication of working IRL.  
  • Some prior experience with financial modeling, forecasting, or intermediate/advanced financial planning.  
  • Strong communication skills and rigorous attention to detail are a must.  
  • The ability to ask very good, thoughtful questions and leave no stone unturned are a must.  
  • Previous operating experience at a Pre-Series B startup is a must.  
  • You have strong business/commercial instincts and are moderately familiar with B2B companies.  
  • BONUS: Familiarity/experience with SQL or Python.

The standard OTE range for this position is $140,000 - $155,000 annually. Compensation offered will be determined by factors such as location, level, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Salary is just one component of Default’s total compensation package for employees. Your total rewards package will include equity and top-notch benefits.
