About The Role

Strategic Operations Manager (Water)

East of England

Due to a sustained period of growth which is set to continue, Z-Tech are recruiting a Strategic Operations Manager within the Water business unit, to join our senior management team working collaboratively alongside the Water business unit manager reporting to the Head of Operations.

This is a high energy and rewarding role overseeing the strategic and operational development of the Water sector business streams.

Z-Tech Control Systems (a part of M Group Services) provides specialist Electrical, Control and Instrumentation support to the UK’s Water, Energy and Rail sectors. We’re dedicated to working with our customers to develop and implement environmentally sustainable and cost efficient solutions to business challenges, enabling them to remain focused on day-to-day operations.

We currently employ more than 250 Z-Techers across 5 business units, each of whom has a diverse range of skills and backgrounds. Business Units

Water – Serving the UK Water companies with EC&I maintenance and project delivery services

Energy – Serving the UK Energy industry with EC&I maintenance and project delivery services

Rail & Adjacent Markets – Serving the transport and adjacent market sectors with EC&I maintenance and project delivery services

ATEX & Electrical Services – Providing ATEX and Electrical compliance services across our primary sectors (Water, Energy & Rail) and multiple adjacent industries across the UK.

Labour – Providing technical embedded labour services across our primary sectors (Water, Energy & Rail) and multiple adjacent industries across the UK.

What will you be doing?

Some Of Your Responsibilities Will Include

  • Strategic development of the Water sector business streams, working primarily alongside the Water business unit Operations Manager and Z-Tech’s across primary sector business units: ATEX & Electrical Services (AES) and Labour Operations Managers.
  • Additionally, management of the strategic operational development of the Water business unit to meet the needs of the customer base and maximise opportunities alongside the Water business unit Operations Manager.
  • Identifying strategic initiatives for the Water business unit to enable them to solve their day-to-day problems that come in all guises: technical, customer, people, and contracts, to name a few.
  • You will in part be responsible for the growth and associated P&L for the Water, AES and Labour business unit.
  • Delivery of the company budget and overall company strategy.
  • Ensuring the business units comply with the company HSEQ standards and procedures.
  • Deputising for the Operations Managers when required

  • You will either be an engineer, or have relevant water industry operational experience.
  • It’s likely that to have acquired the level of wisdom we’re looking for, you’ll have worked in an engineering type environment, in a technical or operations role.
  • Some contract and project management experience would be very useful.
  • Solid commercial acumen with a good understanding of P&L or operational budgets and project costing.

Educational Requirements

  • Desirable - Formal health and safety & Management qualifications.
  • Desirable - Good working knowledge of NEC and/or IChemE family of contracts.
  • Desirable – Other Technical, Operational (Water) or Project Management knowledge.
  • Essential - Advanced Account Management skills and experience of growth strategies.
  • Essential – Excellent presentation skills and ability to engage audiences.
  • Essential - Competent user of IT, specifically Microsoft suite of software, MS Project, MS Office.
  • Essential - Advanced financial knowledge, forecasting, budgeting.
  • Essential - Advanced literacy & communication skills.
  • Essential – demonstrated experience in people management experience (coaching, PDRs & disciplinary)
