This venture capital firm for engineers is looking an entrepreneurial, high potential generalist with a passion for people and building relationships to be the right hand to our President. You’ll support him directly across his management, strategy and investment responsibilities, and the day-to-day will be a balance between talent assessment, relationship management, project ideation, and execution, thought partnership, and ad hoc analysis and support. While the right candidate needs to be highly organized and process-oriented, the position is fundamentally about being an extension of the President--being his first line of defense and partner across the business, so he can focus his time on the highest leverage priorities and delegate work appropriately to the right people across the business.
You'll have visibility into all the elements of running a venture capital firm and develop a keen understanding of what it takes to successfully launch new businesses. This is an opportunity for significant learning and upward mobility as the right candidate will be able to grow into a leadership position at our firm or be well-positioned to start their own company in the future.
You’ll support our President across his four main buckets of responsibilities:
Partnering with our c-suite to provide support and leverage as needed, including research, analysis, and operational support (examples could include working with COO to run new executive searches, to helping operationalize company culture). Working with the Partner to brainstorm, research and launch new business initiatives as needed to support our company and portfolio companies (e.g. management bootcamp for engineers).
Specifically, You’ll Engage In Four Areas Of Support
This company has built a talent engine that sources high potential future founders. With over 5000 founders and engineers in our network today, our talent engine is continuing to scale. While you won’t be responsible for sourcing, about 60% of your time will be spent meeting and building relationships with future and current founders.
Talent Curator - You will constantly be meeting with and speaking to potential founders that have been sourced by our talent engine to determine if it makes sense to connect them to our investment committee, now or in the future. As our talent engine continues to grow and identify great talent at scale, we’ll rely on you to have the first conversation. Relationship Management - Beyond the first meeting, you will be cultivating long-term relationships and regularly keeping in touch with the talent you meet. Not all folks you speak with are going to be ready to start a company today, but when they are ready, you want to ensure that you are their first call. Portfolio Support - Deepening relationships with the founders in our portfolio is one of the most important things the company does, and one of the key areas where our c-suite spends their time. You will be helping to maintain these relationships, and in particular will be learning about founder/portfolio needs and helping to steer them in the right direction to get help. They want to be in the know, so they can anticipate problems at our portfolio companies before they occur and help our founders address them right away. Ad hoc due diligence - You will not be responsible for any financial due diligence, but might be asked to look into certain competitive markets or play with prototypes to help assess the viability of potential ideas/deals.
Partnering with the President on VC strategy is your opportunity to not just be an investor, but be an entrepreneur. To ensure the company stays on the frontier of VC, you will be consistently brainstorming new programs the company can build to help attract the best founders and get access to the best deals. For example, they recently launched a university fellowship program that is now our most successful pipeline for new deal flow coming from college founders. Given the goal of building out the best program for X type of founder (whichever archetype they are focusing on next), you will be responsible for talking to folks on the ground, identifying key problems and then designing, operationalizing and launching the new program(s).
