About The Job

The Twilio R&D Organization has grown at record levels and we are in need of a motivated and adaptable leader to join the R&D Leadership team as the Chief of Staff (COS) to the CPO. The COS will be the right hand to the CPO, helping to drive forward the strategic direction of the global R&D team. The expectation is that this individual serves as the strategic thought partner and advisor to the CPO on all matters pertaining to the R&D organization impacting people, process and systems. The COS will also oversee R&D operating rhythms and key processes supporting organizational effectiveness and culture, including but not limited to: strategic planning, R&D leadership summit, Open Decision Reviews, etc. Finally, this role will partner closely with the R&D Strategy and Operations Leader to ensure strategy and execution alignment, as well as operational efficiency within R&D.

Accordingly, the COS will report directly to the CPO and will partner closely with the top line of R&D Staff (Product & Engineering VP/SVPs, CTO, VP Strategy & Operations, R&D People Leader, R&D Comms Leader, R&D Finance Leader, R&D Executive Business Partner, etc), to drive forward strategic priorities and goals while also influencing the culture of the organization. Additionally, this individual will directly engage with members of Twilio’s Executive Team (CEO, COO, President of Revenue, etc.).

Responsibilities

Strategic / Cultural

  • Work closely with the CPO on continuous efforts to elevate the R&D brand across the company and promote team initiatives/innovations
  • Develop a good understanding of the R&D leadership team’s priorities and “top of mind” in order to provide timely guidance to the CPO
  • Leverage internal partners, both formally and informally, to glean organizational insights; taking action where necessary to get ahead of issues before they rise to the CPO's attention
  • Work with R&D leadership team to align their actions and communications in support of shared goals
  • In partnership with the VP Strategy & Operations, facilitate the development, coordination and communication of the R&D team’s short and long-term business strategies
  • Advise key cross-functional stakeholders on our global R&D strategy as it pertains to our shared goals and plans (e.g., other COS, VP+ communities)
  • Partner with R&D Comms to build an annual system cadence to drive communication, all hands content, internal / external executive decks and collateral regarding Twilio’s products and technologies
  • Own R&D culture-building special events such as: R&D Leadership Summit, Tweek Week, SIGNAL, etc.
  • Lead critical strategic initiatives and projects

Financial

  • Partner with the R&D Finance Leader to manage organizational budget and headcount to ensure on-plan delivery of costs and business outcomes
  • Develop a thorough understanding of the product financials to be able to advise on strategic direction of the portfolio

Operational

  • Own the R&D-wide operating cadences: Operating Reviews, Annual Planning, Long Range Planning
  • Facilitate the planning, coordinating, and keeping contents of strategic meetings such as Operating Reviews, Quarterly Business Reviews (QBRs), Open Decision Reviews (ODRs), etc.
  • Identify continued practice / process improvement opportunities and partner with respective leaders to drive improvements
  • Analyze data of metrics to provide insight and recommendations to improve the organization’s effectiveness
  • Prepare written reports, communications, and other materials as required by the CPO

Who?

  • 5+ years’ executive level experience
  • Impeccable managerial and interpersonal skills
  • Proven track record of effectively interacting with senior management
  • Ability to work strategically and collaboratively across departments, as well as influence at all levels of the organization
  • Strong analytical skills and adept at using key data and reporting tools
  • Effective, versatile and action-oriented
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Familiarity with SaaS and cloud technologies and products in the market
  • Prior experience working in a tech organization

What?

  • Act as an adviser to the CPO and senior management team and as a proxy when needed and where appropriate
  • Assist the CPO in facilitating effective decision-making
  • Organize and coordinate the execution of strategic initiatives, delivery of new programs and resolution of issues
  • Participate in regular meetings with HR, FP&A, Sales, Biz Ops, and various other teams at Twilio to assist in addressing issues, building plans and delivering programs
  • When requested, assess inquiries directed to the CPO, determine the proper course of action and delegate to the appropriate individual to manage
  • Ensure all R&D Leadership team issues are addressed properly, efficiently and judiciously, and keep track of progress until resolved

Colorado Applicants

  • The estimated pay range for this role, based in Colorado, is $205,200-256,500
  • Additionally, this role is eligible to participate in Twilio’s equity plan.

The successful candidate’s starting salary will be determined based on permissible, non-discriminatory factors such as skills, experience, and geographic location within the state. This role is also eligible to participate in Twilio’s equity plan and for the following benefits: health care insurance, 401(k) retirement account, paid sick time, paid personal time off, paid parental leave.
