The Role

This is an exciting opportunity to join the new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) in leading the direction and future of the Allen Institute. This position reports directly to the CEO and is an integral part of the executive team. Primarily responsible for advancing the priorities of the CEO and the mission of the Institute, the Chief of Staff (COS) will serve as an extension of the CEO to receive, elevate, and address issues that impact the Allen Institute, assist the CEO in devising and implementing strategies to ensure our goals, ensure the preparation of important meetings with stakeholders, and orchestrating seamless execution of Board of Director’s materials and meetings.

Additional responsibilities include coordinating the administrative, operational, and financial activities of the (CEO) and working closely with leaders to coordinate strategic alignment across business units. The COS will coordinate internal and external communications on behalf of the CEO and the Institute and partner with executive leaders to facilitate weekly meetings, strategic and operational planning, and evaluation efforts to measure and achieve Institute goals. The COS may also supervise the Executive Assistant of the CEO office.

Required Education And Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • At least five years of related experience partnering with executive teams in a matrixed organization preferably in the life sciences or healthcare sector
  • Proven ability to lead through influence: partner with colleagues, lead and manage strategic initiatives, projects, or programs
  • Proven executive leadership skills and experience in organizational planning in complex, mission-driven organizations, leading matrixed teams that enable success
  • Proven record of accomplishment of building and developing a successful team as these skills are key to successful partnership across the executive team
  • Demonstrated organizational project management aptitude, with the ability to work with deadlines in a fast-moving, deadline-driven environment
  • Exceptional written and general communication skills to inform and influence
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills with the ability to interact and influence executives, scientists, staff, and other stakeholders
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain high levels of confidentiality on sensitive issues and on all matters related to relationships with the CEO, Board of Directors, and other key constituencies
  • Demonstrated proficiency in MS Office and related applications including SharePoint, Teams, and PowerPoint
